SHOTS FIRED: a new comics anthology from our editor, raising money to #EndGunViolence
almost 5 years ago – Wed, Jun 19, 2019 at 09:15:16 PM

Hello, Comics Comics family,

Comicker Press and I are trying again with the campaign for the gun violence prevention comics anthology, which is now titled SHOTS FIRED. We made a few mistakes with the previous campaign and decided to end it early, but we're back with a 28-day campaign, a new hardcover edition—which is both exclusive to the Kickstarter and limited in number, so if you're interested, please don't wait—and a few cost-saving measures that have lowered the goal.

As promised last time, I will only bother you all about this twice: today and shortly before the new campaign ends.

As before, SHOTS FIRED will benefit the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence and the Community Justice Reform Coalition. I think those of you who enjoyed Comics Comics will find this project appealing as well.

I'm sharing the campaign with you because I know that you appreciate comics and anthologies, and—as fans of Patton Oswalt, Jackie Kashian, Sara Benincasa, and the rest of our team, outspoken thinkers about society all—you are engaged in social policy and, whether you lean left or right, care about your fellow citizens. Empathy is, after all, such a large part of comedy and of all art. This is a serious topic, but we will have some funny stories as well, because satire can be a powerful weapon (see the Roger Langridge sample below as an example).

Everyone involved in SHOTS FIRED is donating our time and work, and the campaign's goal is to raise enough money to print and ship the books, with enough copies left over to distribute to bookstores and comics shops, with 100% of proceeds donated to the CSGV and the CJRC.

Our lineup includes:

  • Scott Snyder (Batman, Justice League, American Vampire)
  • Kelly Thompson (Captain Marvel, Jessica Jones, Sabrina the Teenage Witch)
  • David Lafuente (Ultimate Spider-Man, Runaways)
  • Mark Russell (The Flintstones, Snagglepuss: Exit Stage Left)
  • Jamal Igle (Supergirl, Black, The Wrong Earth)
  • Doselle Young (Star Trek, The Authority, Creepy Comics)
  • Marguerite Sauvage (Archie, Faith)
  • Ron Marz (Green Lantern, John Carter: Warlord of Mars)
  • Stuart Moore (Deadpool, Captain Ginger)
  • Shannon Wheeler (Too Much Coffee Man, God is Disappointed in You)
  • Steven Grant (The Punisher, Two Guns)
  • Roger Langridge (Fred the Clown, The Muppet Show, Thor: The Mighty Avenger)
  • Alex de Campi (Archie vs. Predator, Mayday, Grindhouse)
  • Carla Speed McNeil (Finder, No Mercy)
  • and many more great writers and artists!

An Important New Project From Our Editor—EVERY DAY: An Anti–Gun Violence Comics Anthology
about 5 years ago – Tue, Apr 02, 2019 at 10:06:13 PM

Hello, Comics Comics family,

Editor Brendan here, with a few words about a new project I've taken on while I get Comics Comics volume 2 up and running. I promise I'll only bother you about this twice—now, and shortly before the new campaign ends.

I am editing a new anthology for Comicker Press called Every Day: An Anti–Gun Violence Anthology, which will benefit the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence and the Community Justice Reform Coalition. I think those of you who enjoyed Comics Comics will find this project appealing as well.

I'm editing this project because I believe deeply that the lack of common-sense gun regulations in the United States must not be allowed to continue killing 96 people and injuring 246 more every day of the year.

I'm sharing the campaign with you because I know that you appreciate comics and anthologies, and—as fans of Patton Oswalt, Jackie Kashian, Sara Benincasa, and the rest of our team, outspoken thinker about society all—you are engaged in social policy and, whether you lean left or right, care about your fellow citizens. Empathy is, after all, such a large part of comedy and of all art. This is a serious topic, but we will have some funny stories as well, because satire can be a powerful weapon (see the Roger Langridge sample below as an example).

Everyone involved in Every Day is donating our time and work, and the campaign's goal is to raise enough money to print and ship the books, with enough copies left over to distribute to bookstores and comics shops, with 100% of proceeds donated to the CSGV and the CJRC. We are aiming to raise $19,395 in just two weeks, but with your help, we can do it.

Our lineup includes:

  • Scott Snyder (Batman, Justice League, American Vampire)
  • Kelly Thompson (Captain Marvel, Jessica Jones, Sabrina the Teenage Witch)
  • David Lafuente (Ultimate Spider-Man, Runaways)
  • Mark Russell (The Flintstones, Snagglepuss: Exit Stage Left)
  • Jamal Igle (Supergirl, Black, The Wrong Earth)
  • Doselle Young (Star Trek, The Authority, Creepy Comics)

  • Roger Langridge (Fred the Clown, The Muppet Show, Thor: The Mighty Avenger)
  • Alex de Campi (Archie vs. Predator, Mayday, Grindhouse)
  • Carla Speed McNeil (Finder, No Mercy)
  • and many more great writers and artists!

Minicomics!
about 5 years ago – Thu, Jan 31, 2019 at 12:44:25 AM

Hello, Comics Comics family,

Thank you so much for your patience with our limited editions, which have taken longer than planned. We have one more round of signatures to go for the signed hardcover edition, which we expect to happen this week or next. My apologies; the holidays really messed up getting the plates to everyone who needed to sign them.

But something that has come in this week are the minicomics, which means the Underground Comix Comix editions are complete. The mini is written by Community's Dino Stamatopoulos (Starburns himself) and drawn by Roman Dirge, creator of Lenore  and The Cat with the Really Big Head. For full DIY authenticity, I am in the process of hand-folding and -stapling, and the first batches will go out today and tomorrow! Take a look:

These take me back to my earliest days in comics, laying out the pages on the template with tape and whiteout, arranging them so that all 8 pages print correctly on a single sheet of paper, then folding, stapling, and slicing the top. And I feel so lucky to be making such a lo-fi object with story and art from the kind of people whose work usually shows up in much more mass-produced formats. It's a wonderful complement to the glossier main stories in Comics Comics, and I'm very glad the wait is over for everyone who ordered the Underground edition.

As soon as the signed hardcovers are in, the combo packs will begin shipping as well.

Thanks again, and I hope you enjoy!

-Brendan
